DOJ to Investigate Oakland Mayor ICE Raid Warning

DOJ to Investigate Oakland Mayor ICE Raid Warning

Justice Department is reviewing California...

Earlier Thursday, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the U.S. Justice Department was reviewing Schaaf's warning about the Bay Area ICE raids. It's unclear exactly what that review entails.

"It is outrageous that a mayor would circumvent federal authority and certainly put them in danger by making a move such as that", Sanders told reporters at the daily briefing.

Of those arrested, 180 were either convicted criminals who had failed to leave the country after ordered to do so or returned after being deported, ICE officials said in a news release.

"What she did is no better than a gang lookout yelling "police" when a police cruiser comes in the neighborhood, except she did it to a whole community", Thomas Homan, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement acting chief, told "Fox and Friends".

During the operation, ICE's enforcement and removal operations arrested 232 individuals for violating US immigration laws.

Here is the entire News Release from ICE:232 illegal aliens arrested during ICE operation in Northern CaliforniaSAN FRANCISCO- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportation officers arrested 232 individuals for violating federal immigration laws in the San Francisco area of responsibility (AOR), extending from the Bakersfield area north to the OR border, during a four-day targeted operation that ended Wednesday.

It was unclear how many people would have eluded capture without the mayor's warning.

The network, a collaboration of several advocacy organizations, said it confirmed seven people were detained by immigration officers in San Jose in recent days and that others may have been arrested.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf battle heats upImmigrant advocacy group, SIREN, is working to ensure families are prepared should a parent, or both parents, be arrested.

When asked if she would go to jail to defend her sanctuary city, Schaaf said "yes".

"I think it's my responsibility as a person in power and privilege to share the information I have access to, to make sure people know what their rights are", she added.

Then she hit on sanctuary cities, claiming Oakland is exercising its "legal right to be a sanctuary city" and that what is actually illegal is the government "retaliating against jurisdictions that are exercising their right to have sanctuary policies". "We believe our community is safer when families stay together".

More than 200 people were arrested on immigration violations during a four-day operation in Northern California, but authorities said Thursday that hundreds eluded capture because of a warning from Oakland's mayor. Her rationale was carefully layered, noting as she did 1) that her intent was "not to panic our residents but to protect them" and 2) nothing in her announcement endangered law enforcement.
