Congress respects the people's mandate: Rahul Gandhi on northeast polls

With results announced for all 59 seats in Tripura's state legislature, the BJP had won a big majority to form a government on its own in the state, replacing the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI (M).

The elections in 59 seats of the 60-member Assembly were held on February 18.

Spotlighting the differences between the BJP and its coalition partners in the northeast, the Congress today accused the party of playing a "dangerous game of destabilising the region through its blind quest for power at any cost".

"The Congress party respects the mandate of the people of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya", Gandhi said on Twitter two days after results of assembly elections were declared.

Does it stand for demand for division of state of Tripura?Would it reject the demand for a tribal CM?"Mr Surjewala said that in Nagaland, BJP is in Government with NPF yet fought election in alliance with its Opposition party NDPP".

He followed it up with another tweet taking a dig at BJP president and former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa who went to jail over corruption charges during his tenure as CM.

In the past few years, the BJP's groundwork has led to it being viewed favourably by tribal leaders and people and helped increase its tally from zero in the 2013 election to 32 seats (at the time of reporting and not counting its ally- Indigenous People's Front Of Tripura which had won in eight constituencies).

She said the result in Tripura was due to CPM's "surrender" and the "failure" of the Congress to agree to an alliance.

President Biplab Kumar Deb, who is likely to be the party's Chief Ministerial candidate in the northeastern state, on Sunday met outgoing Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and took his blessings.

Downplaying the BJP's victory in Tripura, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee yesterday said the BJP will never win West Bengal and Odisha, and dubbed it as "a cockroach dreaming of becoming a peacock by putting on its feathers".

The Congress has already parachuted its two senior leaders Ahmed Patel and Mukul Wasnik to try and form the new government in Meghalaya.

The NPP won 19 seats, while the BJP managed to win two.

From being an insignificant player in the Northeast's politics, the BJP has come a long way since its emphatic win in the national parliamentary polls almost four years ago.
