Compromise Seeks to Save Netanyahu's Coalition

Had Liberman pulled his Yisrael Beytenu party out of the coalition over the bill, leaving it with 61 seats out of 120, that would likely have spelled early elections, as Netanyahu has said repeatedly that he will not lead a government with such a razor-thin margin.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with Coalition head David Amsalem at a Likud party faction meeting at the Knesset on February 26, 2018.

"Many countries in the Middle East are saying that they are also allowed to enrich uranium if Iran is allowed to do so; therefore, the way to prevent this danger, the nuclearization of the Middle East, is to either thoroughly correct the agreement or abrogate it", he said.

But while the ministerial committee for legislation approved the controversial bill, Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman has not said whether he will accept the compromise. The primary will be held March 22.

Some in Netanyahu's right-wing coalition suggested the prime minister was deliberately allowing the crisis to worsen to expedite elections for personal reasons.

The bill in question is meant to grant a military exemption to Haredi (literally means "in awe of God", often called "ultra-Orthodox" in English but not without controversy) students attending a yeshiva (a traditional Jewish school for the study of the Torah and Talmud).

Speaking after he met last week with Trump, Netanyahu told reporters very little time was spent discussing a peace plan, the Times of Israel reported.

Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon said he would resign if the budget did not pass in the Knesset's winter session, which ends on Sunday.

"If the law is passed in its current form - we're out", Yisrael Beytenu MK Oded Forer told Channel 10 on Monday.

Right-wing and religious parties in the government are divided over the framing of a bill that would protect the exemption ultra-orthodox men have traditionally enjoyed from compulsory military service.

Based on that compromise, parliament could give final approval to the budget and preliminary approval to the conscription bill as early as Tuesday night. Netanyahu teased political rivals at a speech in the Knesset plenum following the agreement, referring to the scenario of early elections being called.

The prime minister is under investigation in multiple corruption investigations, and facing police recommendations to indict him in at least two cases.

The other alleges he sought a secret deal with the publisher of a top-selling newspaper for favourable coverage.

A new poll showed Netanyahu, Israel's second-longest serving prime minister, would emerge stronger from a vote despite the corruption scandal, winning three times as much support as his closest challenger.
