49ers, Raiders pursuing Richard Sherman

49ers, Raiders pursuing Richard Sherman

Continuing an offseason of increasing and monumental change, the Seahawks officially released cornerback Richard Sherman Friday morning, a move that had been rumored for two days and will for now end the Seattle career of one of the team's most iconic players.

The Legion of Boom seems to be over in Seattle after the Seahawks released Richard Sherman on Friday. But Adam Schefter reports "there's a real chance" San Francisco will be his first and last visit.

If he joined the 49ers, Sherman would also be reunited with his partner for one of the most famous plays in Seattle sports history - Malcolm Smith.

Sherman told Albert Breer of the NFL Network that "They wanted the financial flexibility going into free agency but expressed that they wanted me to return and will be in contact". Smith, who caught Sherman's tip of a Colin Kaepernick pass for a game-clinching interception in the 2014 NFC title game, is under contract with the 49ers through 2021 after signing with them past year. The team followed up with a thank you note for Sherman's "immeasurable impact over the years".

However, Sherman's Achilles injury makes him too much of a risk for the Colts, who aren't necessarily in a "win now" mode.

"I want to go to a contender", Sherman said Friday on KIRO radio in Seattle. He had surgery on his left Achilles to remove bone spurs in January. The team has a talented corner in Darius Slay.

Sherman is now an unrestricted free agent and free to negotiate and sign with another team. Also, no player who's been targeted 300-plus times over that span has allowed a lower completion percentage (47.4) or passer rating (50.9). In 2013, Sherman led the National Football League with eight interceptions, and his 32 career picks rank sixth among active players.
