Officers from the Clinton Police Department, Henry County Sheriff's Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol were called to the scene during the incident.

The patrol tweeted Wednesday morning identifying the suspect as James E Waters, 37, from Clinton. Two other officers are in stable condition and undergoing treatment for gunshot wounds - one in the arm and the other in the shoulder, he said.

Lowe said that the Clinton County 911 call center received an emergency call at around 9:20 p.m. and over the phone, two women were appeared very scared and were screaming in the background.

According to the Highway Patrol, Morton served with as a full-time police officer with the Clinton force from February 12, 2015 until January 10, 2017.

The cause of his death is unclear.

Officers entered the home in an attempt to help the woman who called 911 and apprehend Waters. Lowe said the woman heard in the 911 call was not injured.

The officer that was killed in the line of duty Tuesday had come back to the department after Clinton police officer Gary Michael was killed exactly seven months ago on August 6. It's 7 mo to the day from when Clinton Officer Gary Michael was killed.




"It's a small department", Sgt. Bill Lowe said, according to Fox News.

A town in shock - People living in Clinton woke up to the news that another officer was killed. One of the officers was killed. "Especially for this community, they're going to have to have another healing process take place", Lowe said.

According to Morton's Facebook page, the officer graduated from Knob Noster High School, he attended the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg and served in the National Guard as well as the US Army.

Officials said they aren't sure whether the gunman died from police gunfire or a self-inflicted wound.
