Yu Darvish, Cubs Reportedly Agree on 6-Year Contract Worth $126 Million

Yu Darvish, Cubs Reportedly Agree on 6-Year Contract Worth $126 Million

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to sign Yu Darvish to a six-year, $126 million contract.

Darvish's contract is guaranteed to pay him at least $126 million, but it can rise another $24 million if he achieves certain incentives.

In the past three months Darvish had been rumored to be negotiating with more than a half-dozen teams, among them the Cubs, Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Darvish joins Kyle Hendricks, Jon Lester, Jose Quintana and Tyler Chatwood in the Cubs' rotation.

We'll see if the Darvish signing opens the door for the other free agents still waiting to ink deals, including righthander Jake Arrieta, who spent the last 4.5 seasons with the Cubs.

But it could certainly be true that the only teams in the market for expensive free-agent talent are those intending to compete for World Series championships. Darvish started 164 games, was 93-38, had an ERA of 1.99, threw 55 complete games (18 shutouts), pitched 1268.1 innings, and had 1,250 strikeouts.

Arrieta was good last season, when he posted a 2.28 ERA after the All-Star break and made 20 road starts, the most by a Cub in 37 years.

Darvish finished last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, helping them knock out the defending champion Cubs in the playoffs to reach the World Series. For one things, Darvish was famously awful in the World Series previous year, and his two bad performances - whether they were because of a slider-proof baseball or because he was tipping his offspeed pitches - probably cost the Dodgers a World Series title. He has a career 56-42 record with a 3.42 ERA in 131 major league games. The former two showed only tepid interest due to their commitment to staying under the fake salary cap, and the latter two are likely going to focus on the remaining free agent starters - Arrieta, Lance Lynn, and Alex Cobb. In 2017, Darvish did make 31 starts and throw 186 2/3 innings, his highest totals since 2013.
