USA teenager girl charged with felony counts for accidental school shooting

Parents pick up their children at Salvadore Castro Middle School in Los Angeles on Thursday after two students were wounded by gunfire at the school.

The shooting was reported shortly before 9 a.m.at the middle school, which is located on the campus of Belmont High in the 1500 block of Beverly Boulevard.

A mother and daughter react after being picked up on campus after school at Salvadore Castro Middle School in Los Angeles, California on February 1, 2018.

Aerial TV footage showed a handcuffed female suspect being taken into custody and placed into a patrol auto while police went room to room, leading students out with their hands behind their backs. Police interviewed her and by evening they announced that they would book her on a charge of negligent discharge of a firearm on school grounds. The female victim had a gunshot wound to the wrist and was in fair condition. Two other students and an adult suffered minor injuries from flying glass, according to authorities.

Jordan, 15, later told the AP that the girl sat at the desk with her hands covering her face after the incident, and then she asked him to hide the backpack with the gun in it.

"There were numerous kids that ran and other kids that may have left the classroom", Zipperman said.

The shooting was described as "not intentional" by Los Angeles Police Department Spokesman Josh Rubenstein. She was charged with negligent discharge of a firearm, police said.

Mayor Eric Garcetti told local news channel KABC-TV at the scene that it was unclear if the shooting was accidental.

'As a parent, this is everyone's worst-case nightmare, ' LAPD Deputy Chief Bobby Arcos later said at a news conference.

None of the identities of those who were injured have been released.

The child is represented by an attorney and has not spoken to detectives, he said.

Diego Salinas said when his sister texted him from the middle school, he immediately rushed over.

We are fully cooperating with the Los Angeles Police Department in its investigation of this matter.

Los Angeles police kept parents updated on Twitter and in a meeting outside the school, telling them if they had not heard from their child they should assume they were safe and well. "Someone made a decision to bring a gun, I guess someone was accidentally playing around with it", admits Benjamin (who's real name is hidden at the request of his guardians), a seventh-grader attending the Sal Castro Middle School.
