Upcoming PlayStation 4 update includes play time management

Upcoming PlayStation 4 update includes play time management

While there aren't necessarily any huge changes to the way the system works, there are some tweaks that are created to make the user experience a little more organized.

Have you downloaded the new PS4 update yet? Such is the case with the upcoming 5.50 firmware update (codenamed KEIJI).

PS4 update 5.50 will add several other features, including optional system-level PS4 Pro supersampling, Play Time Management for parent/guardian accounts to limit how long their kids spend playing, and Quick Menu shortcuts for better friends and music functionality. Managing Playtime is as simple as heading to Settings Family Management or logging into their PlayStation account from their PC or smartphone, to check and manage their child's daily playtime.

The system will send a notification to the child when playtime is coming to an end, giving them enough time to save progress.

Another helpful organizational feature lets players hide apps from their library.

Speaking of Background Music, you'll now be able to listen to music while streaming a game on PS Now. Users can play these games again once they have re-subscribed to the service.

Following on from this, there's a new function that lets you hide certain apps under the purchased tab in the Library. As someone who participates in numerous betas, trials, and demos, my library is a mess - filled with applications I'll never use more than that initial period. This is the type of content most users will not return to, so it's nice to know they don't ever have to see them in their Library.

The mightily useful Quick Menu is also receiving some quality-of-life improvements, including the ability to quickly access specific friends in your custom list via the pulldown menu under the Friends tab.

Now on to the quick menu improvements. It will also display who is now online.

If you're using Spotify on PlayStation Music, the "square" button will serve as the shortcut for volume control. On the Media Player or the USB Music Player, Triangle works as the shortcut for play or pause.

If your Notifications tab makes you feel like you're in a particularly bad episode of Hoarders, you'll be glad to know that update 5.5 will make it possible to permanently delete any and all old notifications. This is another feature that's useful for gamers who don't want so much clutter on their PS4.

Custom wallpaper had been implemented to some extent previously, but 5.50 allows you to import any image via USB to apply as your background. Once imported, you can even zoom, crop and preview them in-situ to help get the ideal look on your dashboard. To set your logo and background, head over to Events Teams select your team Edit Team Profile.

One of the primary complaints on the original Gold Headset was that the foldable hinges were flimsy and would break over time.

Now, the beta period has started and we have a great deal more clarity around what we can expect from software update 5.5 thanks to a recent blog post. If you lack a 4K television, this new mode takes games that are rendering at higher than 1080p and downscales that output to your television. Reset Era has a list of games that purportedly support supersampling. Available in March in U.S and Canadian retail stores, you will get to pick up Midnight Blue and Steel Black.
