Trump urges GOP to vote on his immigration plan

Trump urges GOP to vote on his immigration plan

The three-day retreat for congressional Republicans, held at a West Virginia resort, is aimed at rallying around legislative priorities before the November elections that will be seen as a referendum on the party's ability to govern and on Trump's presidency.

Trump said they would either have something that is "fair and equitable and secure, or we'll have nothing at all".

Trump has said he is open to extending the deadline and some Republicans have said they would welcome the idea.

The president's framework would provide a 10-12 year path to citizenship for DACA-eligible immigrants, give preference to immigrants with skills needed in the USA economy, end a "visa lottery" that gave people across the world a chance to come legally to the United States, and seek to boost border security by erecting a wall between the United States and Mexico.

But those positive vibes can not mask a much deeper problem for congressional Republicans, one that is barely hidden beneath the surface here.

Federal spending levels are also at issue; Democrats have threatened to block appropriations bills until immigration is handled, The Post report said.

"Under the current broken system, a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives", he said, but promised to allow immigrants to sponsor only spouses and minor children, as "it would protect the nuclear family". And while there was no formal immigration session on the agenda, Lankford and other lawmakers said the issue has come up frequently in informal talks among lawmakers.

The White House has proposed creating a path to citizenship for up to 1.8 million young people living in the county illegally in exchange for billions for a border wall and dramatic cuts to legal immigration.

"We largely agree on the DACA fix, the border security, ending chain migration and the visa lottery program reforms". Would a path to citizenship be included?

Those negotiations were a key reason Democrats relented during the last shutdown, not wanting to poison the talks and because Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) assured lawmakers he meant to bring up a DACA bill with a fair and open amendment process to allow Democrats to shape the bill. And would border security funding include Trump's Wall?

"Inflammatory" is how Democratic Senator Richard Durbin of IL described Trump's remarks. "But the other stuff, if the stakes get raised and then other issues enter the conversation it gets more complicated, and it gets harder to pass in the House".

King said Trump's call to let the young, undocumented immigrants work toward citizenship over 12 years was not well received by Republican lawmakers, many of whom view such a policy as granting "amnesty" to lawbreakers.

"The most pressing, must-do issue that we have is immigration". But while some of his terms are unpalatable to Democrats, his proposal is also too liberal for some Republicans.

Republicans are trying to call Democrats' bluff on DACA, but the Democrats look even more willing to allow a shutdown than they were last month, the analysts said.
