Syrian opposition boycotts Russian-hosted peace talks

A peace conference hosted by Russian Federation that aims to end the conflict in Syria has agreed to set up a committee to draft a new constitution for the war-torn country.

He emphasized that the achievement at Sochi will be a contribution to the UN-led Geneva process for Syria.

Hossein Jaberi Ansari, the assistant foreign minister for political affairs, made the remarks in talks to reporters on the sidelines of the Syrian peace conference in the Russian resort city of Sochi.

He said: "The main result of this Congress is the reloading of the political process, so it could really help Staffan de Mistura to find a rational element in order to prelaunch the constitutional reform".

Russia offered to host the forum in Sochi following a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Syrian counterpart Bashar Assad. "I have also noted that in accordance with the final statement, the Congress supported the list of representatives for the constitutional committee", de Mistura said.

The minister added, "The Congress approved the statement on the foundations and principles of the future national-state structure in Syria".

The Syrian Negotiation Commission (SNC) which arrived from Ankara decided not to attend the congress when they saw the Syrian regime flag at the airport and the conference venue.

"Still the agreements they reach are much more stable, durable and reliable than the ones the like-minded nations adopt at selective meetings instead of the Syrian people", Lavrov said.

Seen as a new platform for direct dialogue with the aim to address the Syrian crisis, the Syrian National Dialogue Congress was aimed at facilitating negotiations between all segments of the Syrian society, including its political and civil powers as well as ethnic, religious and social groups.
