Swansea quake tremor was 'frightening'

People across south Wales and south west England said they felt the quake this afternoon.

The British Geological Survey said on Twitter that an quake of that magnitude occurs in Britain about every two or three years.

The epicenter was located a few miles north of the town of Swansea, Wales, according to the British Geological Survey (BGS), but tremors could be felt across south Wales and the southwest of England.

Videos on social media showed people gathered outside Swansea University, which was holding an open day, after an apparent evacuation.

The natural disaster was the largest one felt in the area since a 5.2-magnitude quake in 2008, the BBC reported. At first, many weren't sure if they had experienced an quake.

According to local newspaper Telegraph, the most serious natural disaster in Britain was the one that hit the Colchester area in 1884 and damaged more than 1,000 buildings.

"I was sat writing in the loft when the table, computer and whole floor shook for a couple of seconds".

Between 200 and 300 earthquakes are detected and located in the United Kingdom each year, and the vast majority of them never amount to very much at all. "We hoped that you had a surprisingly "earth moving" experience!"
