Shopian narrative: Army vs police

Shopian narrative: Army vs police

The murder charges have been slapped on the Indian army by the Jammu and Kashmir administration that has come under huge fire for not being able to stop civilian casualties in encounters between the security forces and insurgent groups seeking freedom of Kashmir from India.

The third man who died is one Rayees Ahmad.

Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Devraj Anbu today said that the Army opened fire into a crowd in Shopian on January 27 in self-defence and in the face of the "ultimate provocation" by a stone-pelting crowd, reported ANI.

Why are we even running the government in Jammu and Kashmir, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has asked.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case against the Major Aditya and his Army unit, 10 Garhwal Rifles and murder charges have been pressed.

Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on had said that when the government has already lodged an FIR against the Shopian murders, ordering a magisterial probe into the murders has confused the case.

As the BJP has demanded a withdrawal of FIR but CM Mufti said that investigation into the killings of civilians would be taken to logical conclusion. "Dismiss that government. Tell Mehbooba (Mufti) to withdraw the FIR else her government would be toppled".

Local residents accused the Army of indiscriminate firing after they resisted attempts to remove banners of slain Hizbul Mujahideen militants. The Army said it fired in "self-defence" when the protesters resorted to "intense stone-pelting, attempted to lynch an injured Junior Commissioner Officer (JCO) and set Army vehicles to fire".

Rayees Ahmad had suffered grievous wounds when army troops opened fire on a group of stone pelters at Ganawpora village in Shopian on Saturday. The burial of the youth will take place and we are monitoring the situation.

At a press conference at the police headquarters on Monday, the DGP said it was a matter of investigation as to what circumstances led to the incident.

"There has been no separate FIR but their version is taken on record", said Dinkar. It is confusing that the BJP is demanding revocation of the FIR, they said.
