Several dozen Russian Federationn, ex-Soviet fighters wounded in Syria clash: Russia

Several dozen Russian Federationn, ex-Soviet fighters wounded in Syria clash: Russia

"As has already been noted, there are Russian citizens in Syria who have traveled there on their own initiative and with different aims", the ministry said.

Reports are that hundreds of people were killed in the U.S. attack on February 7, which the Syrian government described as a "massacre".

Many Russian nationals were reportedly killed in the strike, according to their relatives and paramilitary groups, as well as political organizations that published information about the casualties.

The ministry said none of those hurt were members of the Russian armed forces and that the injured were being treated at hospitals in Russia.

The ministry reiterated that the Russian citizens involved in the recent clashes in Syria were not part of the Russian military force deployed there.

The Russian Foreign Ministry says that "several dozen" citizens of Russia and other former Soviet republics who are not members of the military were wounded in a recent battle with USA -led forces in Syria.

As Russia's Defense Ministry announced earlier, the Syrian militia fighters came under the coalition's strikes in the province of Deir ez-Zor on February 7 due to actions uncoordinated with the Russian military.

Russian officials refuse to admit Russian mercenaries are in Syria despite mounting reported evidence that they are active fighting in the interests of the Syrian government.

U.S. officials said that the killings were done "in self defense".

The statement was later altered to say simply that Mitin had died.

The Russian government is reviewing a bill that would make private military companies legal, in order to clarify the now murky status of mercenaries engaged in conflicts overseas.
