Probe ordered after quack infects 46 with HIV in UP

Kumar treated at least 50 people a day with the same injection, cleaning it with plain water, before injecting the next patient, locals told The Indian Express. "Villagers have told us that the quack used to charge Rs 10 per shot", Unnao chief medical superintendent (CMO) Dr told TOI on Monday. On inquiry, locals said that people used to go to a quack for treatment who used to use a single syringe on everyone.

Meanwhile, the diagnosed patients are undergoing treatment at the Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Centre in Kanpur.

The HIV targets the immune system and weakens people's defence systems against infections and some types of cancer.

SP of Unnao, Pushpanjali said, "On the complaint of Dr Pramod Kumar Dohrey, the in-charge of Bangarmau community health centre, a case has been registered against the quack for negligent act likely to spread infection risky to life, voluntarily causing grievous hurt by unsafe weapons or means, and Section 15 (3) of the Indian Medical Council Act".

"A two-member committee had which visited villages in Bangarmau to investigate the reasons behind the increase in such cases", he said. "We later found out that a person has been giving injections using a common syringe to the victims". "So we're mapping truck drivers who come there and offer treatment to them", state Health Minister Sidharth Nath Singh.

The 33 confirmed cases come from a screening of 566 people tested at government-organized HIV camps on January 24, 25 and 27, Choudhary noted.

HIV can survive in syringes for up to four weeks. Health directorate sources here said that action would also be taken against the district health officials for their failure to crack down on the quacks operating in the district.

Yadav has yet to be apprehended. The state government has registered a case against the fake doctor, Rajendra Kumar, and has intensified efforts to arrest him.
