NCAA Brackets Preview Projects Kentucky as No. 7 Seed in South

The committee placed the Spartans in the South Region, where Virginia and Cincinnati are the top two teams.

The committee rated Michigan State a No. 3 seed in its midseason bracket reveal on Sunday afternoon. Per TeamRankings, it has a 100 percent chance to make the NCAA Tournament; a 34.6 percent chance to earn a 2-seed (and 18.4 percent chance to earn a top seed); a 10.7 percent chance of making the Final Four and a 1.7 percent chance to win the national championship.

Xavier (23-3) and Purdue (23-4) would get No. 1 seeds if the NCAA men's basketball tournament started Sunday, according to a brackets preview released by the selection committee.

Villanova was selected as the second No. 1 seed (East Region). The top 16 bracket reveal showed the selection committee is stressing the number of quality wins above everything else, including the actual "quality" of so-called quality wins, with the new Quadrant system.

Virginia was projected as the No. 1 overall seed (in the South region) and joined on the 1-line by Villanova (East), Xavier (Midwest) and Purdue (West).

Purdue, despite losing both of its games last week, is No. 1 in the West Region with Kansas, North Carolina and Arizona in Los Angeles. Instead, the Spartans were named as one of the four No. 3 seeds. The NCAA no longer groups a team's wins and losses by RPI Top 25, RPI Top 50, etc. on the "team sheet" presented to selection committee members.

Michigan State is ranked as the No. 11 overall seed, behind Clemson (No. 9) and Texas Tech (No. 10). The No. 4 seeds are Tennessee, Ohio State, Arizona and Oklahoma.
