Melania Trump's parents may have used 'chain migration'

While the first lady's parents may be beneficiaries of the immigration program, that hasn't stopped President Donald Trump from railing against the program in the past.

A lawyer representing Melania Trump's parents has said they are living legally in the US.

Slovenian-born Viktor and Amalija Knavs have been granted permanent residency, and will become full American citizens in the coming months, reports the Washington Post.

Stephanie Grisham, a spokeswoman for Melania Trump, wrote in an email that she would not comment on the first lady's parents because "they are not part of this administration, and deserve their privacy".

President Donald Trump has pushed to restrain workers' capacity to support relatives to go along with them in the USA, and called such family reunification "chain movement". Immigration experts said it would have been the most direct, and most likely, way for Melania Trump's parents, formerly of Slovenia, to get their green cards. The latter is unlikely, he said, as it would require evidence that there were no Americans who could do the job for which they were hired.

The president has repeatedly called for an end to "chain migration" for extended family members and has identified it as one of the four pillars he says must be included in immigration legislation.

"It would be odd if she sponsored her parents and didn't want to talk about that because it's a fairly routine thing", said Hiroshi Motomura, a law professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, who specializes in immigration law.

About 7 million of the 11 million immigrants who obtained green cards between 2007 and 2016 did so through familial relations, according to data from the Department of Homeland Security.

She received a green card that granted her permanent residency in 2001 and became a United States citizen in 2006. Viktor Knavs worked as a driver and vehicle salesman while Amaljia Knavs made patterns at a textile factory.

Immigration layer David Leopold said that Melania's sponsorship of her parents likely allowed them to obtain green cards.

Melania became a citizen in 2006.

Such efforts are not unusual, and some congressional staffs, including Schumer's, have a dedicated immigration case worker to handle such requests.

In his State of the Union address January 30, President Trump offered a four-point immigration plan that he said "protects the nuclear family by ending chain migration".

He said: 'Under the current broken system, a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives.

The President's insistence that the cuts to family-based migration be included in a deal to preserve the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that protected young undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children was an insurmountable sticking point in negotiations when the Senate failed to reach a compromise on the issue last week. "This vital reform is necessary, not just for our economy, but for our security, and our future".

"We need a 21st Century MERIT-BASED immigration system", he tweeted later.

The White House declined to comment to the Post.
