Maxwell ton gives Aussies the edge over England in T20 Tri-Series

Maxwell ton gives Aussies the edge over England in T20 Tri-Series

Australia captain David Warner said: "The last game was similar to how this pitch will play".

Chasing 156, Australia suffered several wobbles but Maxwell's stunning 58-ball unbeaten 103 ensured they claimed victory with nine balls to spare. It was deja-vu in the following six ball stint as another aggressive approach resulted in a further 15 runs off spinner Rashid as Australia threatened to run away with their chase.

"I'm a massive fan of tri-series, they bring the competitive nature out in every team", he said.

There had been a clear-cut opportunity to remove Maxwell on 40 when Alex Hales put him down in the deep and, expanding on his views later, Morgan added: "It's two dropped catches officially". The Victorian stood up amid a stuttering Australian innings, which started disastrously at 4 for 2.

Opener David Warner clubbed the first ball of the innings back over the head of David Willey for four and next ball was caught pulling to deep square leg.

Two balls later, Chris Lynn was walking back to the pavilion for a duck after having his stumps rattled.

Despite the early setbacks, BBL dynamo D'Arcy Short flamboyantly attacked as he smashed 17 runs off his first 6 deliveries punctuated by a powerful pulled six off danger man Willey.

These early incisions gave England a chance, but Short and Maxwell were not unduly concerned by the required run rate and so were able to play with relative comfort in their distinctive styles.

In-form Short (30 from 20 balls) looked set for a breakout knock at the global level but hammered a return catch to Rashid, whose wily turn was getting England back into the contest.

A Glen Maxwell unbeaten hundred has managed to get Australia over the line against England in the latest T20 global.

The match takes place at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart.

England were without four players when they tuned up for the series with a demolition job on the Prime Minister's XI in Canberra, but are looking healthier after a couple of days in Tasmania.

It was a swift return to reality for beanpole quick Billy Stanlake, who was thumped for 1-43 from four overs after a starring performance in Australia's opening tri-series win over New Zealand. Yet their gung-ho approach failed to pay dividends as Roy was dismissed in the second over as Andrew Tye took a comfortable catch at cover off the bowling of Kane Richardson.

England: Eoin Morgan (capt), Sam Billings, Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Dawid Malan, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, James Vince, David Willey, Mark Wood.

The Poms limped to 155 runs from their 20 overs.
