'Magnet for Terrorists': Iraqi Shiite Groups Reportedly Demand US Withdrawal

'Magnet for Terrorists': Iraqi Shiite Groups Reportedly Demand US Withdrawal

The U.S. -led coalition has said in a press release on Monday it would switch operations in Iraq from its combat phase to sustaining and securing gains made against the Islamic State terrorist group.

The Iraqi government said Monday the USA military will reduce its troops in Iraq after the defeat of the Islamic State (IS) militant group in the country.

An Iraqi government spokesman says this means a gradual troop reduction.

Since Iraqi forces and the Iranian-backed Hashd al-Shaabi militias took control of Kirkuk, the oil-rich city has experienced unprecedented security incidents including kidnappings, assassinations, and bombings.

Western contractors at a US -led coalition base in Iraq were the first to tell the AP on Monday that American troops had started to drawdown from the country.

"We will sustain the successful momentum and enhance the capacities of the Iraqi security forces in pursuing Daesh, now and in the future".

According to western contractors at a US-led coalition base in Iraq, American soldiers have been transported from Iraq to Afghanistan on daily flights over the past week, along with weapons and equipment.

Authorities in Iraqi Kurdistan said Tuesday they had detained some 4,000 suspected members of the Islamic State group, including foreigners, in recent years.

US military personnel records made public last fall indicated that there may have been as many as 9,000 American troops in Iraq assisting with the advise-and-assist mission with the Iraqi military.

Braga's remarks came after USA media reports claimed that the US had begun reducing the number of its troops in Iraq after Baghdad's victory over Daesh.

The 300 or so Americans account for about 1 percent of the estimated 30,000 foreign fighters who joined ISIS in Iraq and Syria. The Islamic State peaked, in terms of power and territory, in the summer of 2014, when it held large parts of Syria and Iraq. One of his commanders sent him back to OH with orders to attack a USA military facility.

A dozen return to the U.S.

There were some 170,000 American troops in Iraq in 2007 at the height of the surge of USA forces to combat sectarian violence unleashed by the US -led invasion of the country to oust dictator Saddam Hussein.

Several western contractors have also confirmed the withdrawal of USA troops.
