Justice Department's No. 3 official to resign

Justice Department's No. 3 official to resign

"I think it's a disgrace what's happening in our country", Trump said last week when he was asked about the release of a memo from Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee claiming abuses in the Russian Federation investigation.

After just nine months on the job, Brand had become more and more uneasy with Trump's escalating attacks on the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which she and other law enforcement professionals feared was beginning to undermine the rule of law, according to sources familiar with her thinking. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, himself repeatedly criticised by Trump, praised her "critical role in helping us accomplish our goals as a department".

If Rosenstein had been fired or quit, oversight of Muell'ers investigation would have fallen to Brand. That process would be certain to raise questions from lawmakers about the nominee's willingness to remain independent from the Trump administration once in office, including the ability to withstand any pressure to dismiss the special counsel if asked to do so by the White House.

Brand, who became associate attorney general in May, has kept a relatively low profile and, unlike other top officials, has not been personally targeted by Trump.

A Justice Department official said that Jesse Panuccio, the Principal Deputy Associate Attorney General, will temporarily take over Brand's job until a replacement is named. That job would now fall to Solicitor General Noel Francisco.

Brand has kept a very low profile at the department, but in December she wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post defending the renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which permits the National Security Agency to collect foreign intelligence on USA soil without individualized warrants.

The department said Brand will be leaving her post in the coming weeks. Walmart sought Brand to be head of global corporate governance at the retail giant, a position Gorelick said has legal and policy responsibilities that will cater to her strengths. It's unclear who will replace her.

Another source, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said Brand will go to work as an executive at Walmart, the world's largest retailer.

'She felt this was an opportunity she couldn't turn down, ' Gorelick told the Associated Press.

"It really seems to have her name on it", Gorelick said. Here's everything you need to know about the DOJ official resigning!

"Rod and Rachel are Harvard graduates, they are experienced lawyers".
