IPhone source code was reportedly leaked by former Apple employee

A former intern at Apple reportedly leaked a portion of source code for iOS, the proprietary iPhone operating system.

iBoot is part of the operating system that will enable the secure boot chain.

An anonymous GitHub user posted Apple's ultra-secret iBoot source code on the internet on Wednesday.

Having access to such source code is one way for security researchers to find flaws in source code and report any bugs they might throw up that could potentially be exploited by hackers. Apple, as a general rule of thumb, keeps most of their source code private, which is why this phenomenon is certainly a rare problem for the tech giant.

When an iPhone has been jailbroken, users can run software that's not typically allowed or delete applications that come pre-loaded on the device, also known as 'bloatware'. READ NEXT:70% of consumers would boycott services with poor data protection The release, presumably made by an Apple insider, has been described by iOS expert Jonathan Levin as "the biggest leak in history". However, Apple did not explain how the source code ended up being exposed to the public.

There's been a huge leak on the web today, which has put every iPhone on the market in danger in terms of security. Even though we're looking at an iBoot for the iOS 9.3, it doesn't mean that the loopholes or workarounds would be useless for the latest iOS versions. Although Apple hasn't directly commented on the breach's authenticity, its expedited DMCA request strongly implies the source was genuine code.

While clarifying, the company said that the iPhone security doesn't rely on source code secrecy. It is also a big deal because Apple has a bug bounty program in place that pays up to $200,000 for iBoot vulnerabilities. "There are many layers of hardware and software protections built into our products, and we always encourage customers to update to the newest software releases to benefit from the latest protections".

The two friends who first received the code never intended for it to be leaked online. Some may say it won't make any difference but then Apple wouldn't have taken the trouble to take down the iBoot through a legal notice if it contains nothing that can work against its interest. "Apple isn't prone to open-sourcing its code so most understanding of iOS" internals has been acquired through reverse-engineering attempts.
