Google reportedly shipped 3.9 million Pixel and Pixel 2 devices in 2017

Google reportedly shipped 3.9 million Pixel and Pixel 2 devices in 2017

Turns out, though, that while it may be vocal, that user base isn't exactly huge. Google seems to have improved its supply line issues with the Pixel 2, which has consistently been in stock. Google's only on its second generation of phones (the Nexus phones, which were never driven by a strategy of scale, don't really count), but if you compare its 2017 shipments to Apple's second-generation iPhone, the 3G, which sold 1 million units inits opening weekend, you start to see that it's very clear very few people are leaping onto the Pixel train, despite a lavish marketing campaign.

iPhone and Galaxy phone sales dwarfed Pixel by a massive margin.

IDC Research Director Francisco Jeronimo tweeted that Google shipped 3.9 million units of the Pixel and Pixel 2 combined in 2017.

The Google Pixel smartphones were supposed to be Android's answer to Apple's iPhone. For comparison, Apple typically has sales stats showing over a million iPhones sold per day.

The third reason is that Google doesn't have a strong retail presence. Chinese vendors such as Huawei and OnePlus have been unable to penetrate the U.S. market primarily because they haven't yet succeeded in striking deals with the United States carriers. The company needs to figure out what makes the Pixel special. Apple also has deals with all the major carriers in the U.S., putting iPhones in even more retail locations with even more salespeople.

Even HMD Global, which began selling Nokia-branded smartphones past year, sold more phones than Google.

In comparison, the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus sold 20 million devices in around four months a year ago. In fact, Apple and HMD Global will be the only major vendors to see an increase in sales this year as the smartphone market matures. TrendForce expects its sales to jump more than 70% this year to surpass 20 million units. HMD is now the world's sixth largest smartphone vendor.
