Family feud: Rob Porter's domestic scandal riles White House

It wouldn't be the last time Kelly downplayed assault accusations.

CNN interviewed Jennifer Willoughby, the second ex-wife, Thursday, who revealed that Porter contacted her this week to ask her to "minimise the mistreatment" in a public statement.

Willoughby told the "Today" show Friday that she filed a temporary protective order against Porter after he punched in a door at their home while they were separated, because she "really didn't know what else he was capable of".

Shah said that there was nothing unusual in Porter's working as staff secretary without yet having a security clearance.

Kelly's first statement on Porter complimented him without mentioning the allegations. Kelly said in a statement that Porter was "a man of true integrity and honor, and I can't say enough good things about him". "He is a friend, a confidante and a trusted professional".

Shah also sought to address news reports that Porter's ex-wives had told the Federal Bureau of Investigation about the alleged abuse months ago as part of a background check on Porter that was being conducted so that he could obtain a security clearance.

Talk about Porter's past started spreading throughout the White House after a former girlfriend told McGahn in November that he should investigate the abuse alleged by the ex-wives, according to people familiar with the matter.

President Trump was not aware of Porter's security clearance status, Shah said, and didn't find out about the allegations against Porter until Tuesday evening.

When asked what he had asked her to say, Willoughby responded: 'I don't remember the exact wording, but it was something along the lines of the post does not accurately depict my marriage. "I told him, I'm going to tell them the truth". He came out with that statement less than an hour later'. He also said Porter had been "terminated", before later clarifying that he had resigned.

'He was curious what I was going to say.

On Thursday, the Post also reported that Porter has been explaining the pictures of Holderness' black eye, which she has distributed to the media, saying that "they were arguing over a vase, and she was somehow hit with the vase".

The revelations have rocked the White House, forcing questions about whether chief of staff John Kelly knew about the allegations.

Toni Van Pelt, head of the feminist group National Organization for Women, put it bluntly.

"President Trump's framework would end the visa lottery programme and reallocate some of the visas to help reduce backlog of high-skilled, employment-based immigrant cases", the White House said in a fact sheet titled "ending the economic harm caused by our immigration system". "I've lost count as to how many Trump appointees have been sidelined due to their past views or conduct".

For there to be "multiple White House aides" who won't clear the bar sounds alarming.

At any rate, the president is reportedly unhappy with the way the White House has handled the Porter story.

Raj Shah, the Principal Deputy Press Secretary of US President Donald Trump, has made his daily press briefing debut at the White House, becoming the first Indian-American to do so.
