EPL: Liverpool spank Saints, climb up to third

Firmino returned the favour from the first goal with an audacious backheel into Salah's path and he slotted the ball into the bottom corner for his 22nd league goal of the campaign to close back to within one of Harry Kane in the golden boot race.

Liverpool moved back above Tottenham and into third place in the Premier League table as two first-half goals gave them a routine 2-0 victory at struggling Southampton.

It put pressure on Manchester United, who suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at Newcastle at St James' Park, Liverpool are just two points off Jose Mourinho's side.

However, defending wasn't brilliant, especially from balls into the box and so the likes of Hoedt and Stephens will need to watch out for this as Liverpool could really damage us with the likes of Mane, Firmino and Salah.

Heavy rotation around the festive period was designed for the goal that Liverpool could fire on all cylinders when winter turned into spring and, while Man City are out of sight, that period arrives as Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal show signs of faltering.

It seems Klopp already has a 30-goal per season striker - not only that, but one who contributes to the team's build-up and presses better than any other attack-minded player in the league.

"Last season, little by little, Jack was playing more in the second part of the season and that is more or less the same now". A drop-off from a key player in other teams might have devastating consequences, but Firmino and Salah have more than papered over the cracks. But the turn of the year saw his side pick up results that keep have taken some of the heat off, for the time being at least.

Mane and substitute Adam Lallana had further opportunities in the final 15 minutes, though neither miss mattered a great deal as Liverpool clinched all three points with minimal fuss. "The only thing we can do is win our games, but it will stay tight until the end".

On his club's hopes of avoiding relegation, he added: "It's emotional for a lot of people".
