Egypt unveils 4400-year-old tomb discovered near Giza pyramids

An Old Kingdom tomb was discovered in the Western Cemetery located in the Pyramids area in Giza to an ancient Egyptian woman named Hetpet, as announced on Saturday by the Egyptian Minister of Antiquities Khaled Anany.

The Ministry of Antiquities on Saturday unveiled the tomb near the Pyramid of Khafra and said it belonged to Hetpet, a priestess to Hathor, the goddess of fertility, who lived during the Fifth Dynasty and assisted women in childbirth.

Some portraits showed her in hunting and fishing scenes and receiving offerings from children, while others showcased people melting metals and dancing.

"Such scenes are rare. and have only been found previously in the [Old Kingdom] tomb of "Ka-Iber" where a painting shows a monkey dancing in front of a guitarist, not an orchestra", Al-Waziri said.

Throughout 2017, there were numerous discoveries across Egypt.

Al-Waziri believes there are other ancient artifacts waiting to be uncovered near the site. Egypt is facing serious tourism downfall but discoveries like this and more can gain tourism which will generate revenue.

He said: 'This is a very promising area.

"What we see above the earth's surface in Egypt doesn't exceed 40 percent of what the core holds", Al-Waziri told The Associated Press.

The area of the latest discovery is close to a new museum under construction that will house some of Egypt's most unique and precious artefacts, including many belonging to the famed boy king Tutankhamun.

The new Grand Egyptian museum is expected to be opened later this year.

The newly discovered tomb of Hetpet has the architectural style and the decorative elements of the Fifth Dynasty with an entrance leading to an L-shaped shrine with a purification basin.

The country hopes these findings will help draw more tourists. Egypt's vital tourism sector has been hit hard by extremist attacks and political turmoil following the 2011 popular uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

In December, Cairo and Moscow signed a security protocol and announced plans to resume Russian flights to the Egyptian capital, due to start this month.
