Court sentences Finsbury Park attacker Darren Osborne to 43 years in prison

Court sentences Finsbury Park attacker Darren Osborne to 43 years in prison

A British judge on Friday sentenced a man who drove a van into a group of Muslim worshipers near a London mosque to life in prison.

The father of four from had planned "a suicide mission" and expected to be shot dead, Justice Cheema-Grubb said, the BBC reported.

On June 19 a year ago, Osborne drove his van intendedly into the worshippers leaving Finsbury Park Mosque after evening prayers in north London.

A jury found the Cardiff-based man guilty of murder and attempting to kill others in the crowd outside the mosque in North London's Finsbury Park district 19 June.

James O'Brien said the far-right and Islamic extremists are two sides of the same coin and are radicalised in the same way.

She imposed a life sentence for murder and attempted murder, with a minimum stretch of 43 years behind bars.

A witnesses recalled Osborne saying, "I've done my job, you can kill me now" when he was stopped by members of the public as he tried to escape.

In open testimony, Osborne also told the court he had originally hoped to use the van to murder Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, adding that "it would have been better" if London mayor Sadiq Khan was also there: "It would have been like winning the lottery", he said.

Ruzina Akhtar, the eldest daughter of Makram Ali, 51, said that her mother had been too scared to go out by herself since her husband was run over by Darren Osborne, 48.

"This was a terror attack".

"Our father, like the victims of most terrorism, was entirely innocent which makes his death in this violent way all the more hurtful and we can not imagine the trauma he felt in the last few minutes", she said.

Mr Mahmoud, who has been an imam at the mosque since 2011, told Osborne's trial that it had been a "natural response" to protect the murderer.

"He later invented an unconvincing story to counter the overwhelming weight of evidence, but the jury has convicted him", she said.

"This was a terrorist attack. I can assure you we will do our utmost to calm down any tensions", he said.

He used a rented van to target Muslims as they returned from prayers during the holy month of Ramadan, and the court heard he had wanted to kill as many as possible.
