Cassie Sharpe Wins Gold In Ski Halfpipe At PyeongChang Olympics

PyeongChang 2018Cassie Sharpe (CAN) needed just two runs in the freestyle skiing halfpipe, landing in the gold-medal spot after each.

Sharpe's first run of the final - which included cork 900s in both directions - didn't even contain her biggest trick, but it still put her atop the leaderboard with a 94.4. All participants will get three runs, with their best score counting toward the medals. She scooped up her daughter in her arms after the run, having said she is giving up the competitive skiing to have more children.

Spencer O'Brien of Courtenay, B.C., was 11th after earning 76.75 points in her second run.

Sharpe posted three victories earlier this season. In big air, the best score from two runs counts.

Sharpe made no mistakes in her first Olympics appearance. "I'm stoked to be going to finals, but it wasn't exactly what I wanted to lay down", she said.

Sharpe changed it up a bit for her second run, adding a half-rotation at the end for a 1080 tailgrab. Brita Sigourney scored a 91.60 on an invigorating slew of high-flying tricks and twists, besting Drew by a mere.80 points on her way to the bronze medal.

"I feel my body a bit more when I'm stressed, and this is the first time since I hurt myself that I've skied four days in a row".

"I chose to go for it and I wasn't going to hold back. My job is my favourite thing to do", said Sharpe.

Martinod, at 33 the oldest skier in the field, threw down a pair of stylish runs to put pressure on Sharpe.

The 28-year-old from Calgary broke her arm in the shoulder joint just nine weeks ago and it's not yet healed. Bowman has said that in the morning, if given the option of pressing the snooze button or getting right out of bed, she hits snooze.

"The pride for me isn't in the medal, it's in that she did all she could do on that day", said Stuart Robinson, who coached Sharpe at Mount Washington on Vancouver Island from 2009 to 2014. "And I wouldn't say that she has any failures, but I think that the successes are that much more fantastic when she experiences them".

Sigourney, Bowman and Logan train in Park City, Utah.

"I definitely learned a lot coaching Cassie", he said.

Sharpe, a skier since childhood, rode her first halfpipe in 2012 and by 2015, had announced herself as one of the most technical skiers to ever drop into a women's halfpipe competition.
