Trump Administration: End NASA Funding for ISS by 2025

Trump Administration: End NASA Funding for ISS by 2025

Ending support would free up resources for other work, such as the Space Launch System, the Orion crew capsule or the recent directive to return NASA astronauts to the moon, signed by the President past year.

Recently, there has been concerns that the administration plans to stick to Obama's timeline and stop funding for the station in 2024. Sen. The US has spent some $87 billion to built and operate the ISS since 1993.

The report mentions that the ISS' end of operational lifetime is set to happen in 2028, and commercial space companies and researchers would like Nasa to continue funding it till then.

A NASA spokesperson told The Verge that "NASA and the International Space Station partnership is committed to full scientific and technical research on the orbiting laboratory, as it is the foundation on which we will extend human presence deeper into space".

The White House isn't planning on releasing its budget until February 12, so exact details are sketchy, and the National Space Council declined to comment.

In the budget documents, seen by The Verge, all financial support from the United States could be terminated by 2025. After that, the future of the 20 year International Space Station is up in the air.

It's not clear from the draft proposal how NASA's role in the ISS would end, and how it would be coordinated with the station's worldwide partners.

Last year, NASA was asked to come up with alternative funding for ISS as part of the NASA Transition Authorization Act signed by President Trump.

It's not entirely unreasonable that funding for the Space Station would end by 2025.

Having ceded space launches to low Earth orbit to the private sector with the retirement of the space shuttle, NASA proposes to do the same with LEO operations.

The President also wants NASA to lead a space exploration program that would look to send astronauts not only back to the Moon but also to Mars.

According to The Verge: "Nasa has been developing both a giant rocket, the Space Launch System, and a crew capsule, Orion, to take astronauts beyond lower Earth orbit". Companies like Bigelow and Axiom need to start developing private markets, everything from space tourism to manufacturing products in microgravity. One of them is even attached to the station now, as a test site. "What also is a fact is the ISS is still the only game in town that we have at the moment".
