Top PLO official says Trump threatened to 'starve Palestinian children'

Top PLO official says Trump threatened to 'starve Palestinian children'

"But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace", he went on, "why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?"

Erekat slammed the American president for being unreasonable with the Palestinians and accused Trump, by his actions, of encouraging "the Israeli occupation to consolidate its occupation and apartheid regime".

"We're trying to move for a peace process, but if that doesn't happen, the president is not going to continue to fund that situation", she added.

The December 6 announcement concerning the disputed city led Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas to say the U.S. could no longer play any role in the Middle East peace process.

"President Trump has sabotaged our search for peace, freedom and justice".

Trump abruptly reversed decades of U.S. policy in December when he recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital, generating outrage from Palestinians and the Arab world and concern among Washington's Western allies.

Trump's threat in a tweet on Tuesday to try to force the Palestinians into negotiations led to further outrage, though Israeli ministers lauded the move.

"The president has basically said he doesn't want to give any additional funding, or stop funding, until the Palestinians agree to come back to the negotiation table", Ambassador Nikki Haley told reporters when asked about future United States funding for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees.

Earlier yesterday, Mr Trump's UN ambassador disclosed plans to stop funding a United Nations agency that provides humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees.

"As an example, we pay the Palestinians HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect. Now he dares to blame the Palestinians for the consequences of his own irresponsible actions!" she said in a statement.

The Guardian calls Trump's posturing "dangerous", and says it demonstrates "a lack of understanding of the delicate mechanics that help maintain relative peace between Israelis and Palestinians".

"Jerusalem is not for sale, neither for gold nor for silver", Nabil Abu Rudainah said on Wednesday.

The US is the donor, providing nearly $370 million (£270m) in 2016.

According to the monthly "Peace Index" by the Israel Democracy Institute (full results here), 65 percent of Jewish Israelis believed that Trump's declaration last month was in Israel's best interests, as opposed to 23 percent who believed the move damaged them.

"The Palestinians now have to show their will that they want to come to the table".

Certainly much has changed since the negotiations of the 1990s, and the United States can not unilaterally impose a divided Jerusalem.

But on Tuesday night he acknowledged in a series of tweets that the attempt to revive the peace process had stalled.

The US was the biggest donor to UNRWA in 2016, giving $368,429,712.

The Palestinians last month walked away from Trump administration attempts to revive the peace process after Trump broke with 70 years of USA executive branch policy and recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Trump's recent decision to declare Jerusalem as Israel's capital has emboldened Israel's leadership to take dramatic measures to safeguard their claims to land in Jerusalem. Trump's Mideast peace team had held meetings with Israeli, Palestinian and Arab leaders for almost a year ahead of an expected peace proposal.

In response, the Palestine Liberation Organization's Twitter feed said Trump's Jerusalem decision had damaged peace prospects.
