Suspect in custody after school shooting in Italy, Texas

Suspect in custody after school shooting in Italy, Texas

The suspect was not identified and his connection to the high school was not immediately know.

"We hope that things like this never happen in a community; unfortunately, we have to prepare as a school district", he said.

Italy school Superintendent Lee Joffre notified parents of the shooting via text message just after 9 a.m., Dallas TV station WFAA reported.

Edge says both students attended the school in the tiny town of Italy, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Dallas.

According to the Texas Tribune, Italy High School has students in 6th through 12th grades. Neither knew the girl's condition, and Parkland spokeswoman April Foran said she could give no information.

A CBS11 reporter said that a female student was shot, and the suspect is a male student.

It's unclear what led to the shooting. He would not say whether the boy has had disciplinary issues at the school. He said it was also working to make sure grief counselling was available for students. Unconfirmed reports on U.S. media said one person had been injured and was being transferred to hospital.

Italy, which promotes itself as "The Biggest Little Town In Texas", has about 2,000 residents and is located between Dallas and Waco.

ECSO posted to Facebook an update saying students, under police guard, were being moved as the investigation continues.

Other details were not released.
