Secretary Of State Committed To Restoring Devolution In NI

British Prime Minister Theresa May appointed Karen Bradley as the government's Northern Ireland minister on Monday, moving her from her position as culture minister.

It is being reported that Mr Brokenshire has "a small lesion on his right lung and will be having major surgery in the coming weeks".

She said: "Of course I have a very important job to do, my immediate challenge and key objective is to make sure Northern Ireland has a devolved government in place to address issues that effect everybody's lives including, health, education and the economy".

The failure of the talks is pushing Northern Ireland closer towards direct rule from London.

"It has been a huge privilege to serve in your Government and to serve the people of Northern Ireland as Secretary of State".

If Northern Ireland's politicians think her lack of experience means Ms Bradley will be a soft touch, however, they might consider how she has confounded low expectations in the past.

Owen Smith, Shadow of State for Northern Ireland, said he was very sorry to hear Mr Brokenshire had left the cabinet and joined those in wishing him a speedy recovery.

"Which is strong devolved government for the whole community in Northern Ireland and in the interest of the whole United Kingdom".

"Rather than looking for reasons not to restore the Executive the parties should focus on why this matters now more than ever".

Restoring power-sharing is a "top priority" she said upon taking up the role.

The trip will be the first time that she has set foot in Northern Ireland, either personally or professionally.

He said: "There is no time left to go through the same failed process between two parties and cross our fingers, hoping things will be different". The situation he leaves, however, is arguably the most serious crisis in the 20 years since Labour helped forge the Good Friday agreement and brought peace to Northern Ireland.

The talks are expected to centre on proposals to consider a fresh attempt at talks to restore devolved government at Stormont after power-sharing collapsed previous year.

"While it is not always obvious to the public gaze, very important progress has been made on significant issues over the past year and I believe that a positive outcome can still be achieved".

Warm tributes have been paid to Mr Brokenshire, with both political allies and opponents sending him best wishes as he deals with his health issues.
