Federer in record 7th Aussie Open final after Chung retires

Federer in record 7th Aussie Open final after Chung retires

Wozniacki, the No. 2 seed, is the first player from Denmark to win a Grand Slam singles title after 43 majors and two failed attempts in finals.

Halep called for the trainer at 3-2 ahead in the second set for general health reasons, but it didn't hinder her play, breaking Wozniacki in the eighth game to take a 5-3 lead.

After the match, Wozniacki, 27, addressed Halep, who is still looking for her first Grand Slam title.

Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki will be trying to end a long wait for a maiden major crown in the Australian Open final today between the world's two best players.

Having lost both her previous Slam finals to Maria Sharapova and Jelena Ostapenko at Roland Garros, the 26-year-old was once again defeated at the final hurdle in a match that went the distance. I'm sad that I lost the match, I was not the victor, but life goes on.

Tennis star Caroline Wozniacki may be in for a $3.3 million cash windfall if she wins Saturday's Australian Open final, but she's been topping up her earnings very nicely at a local Melbourne casino.

For Halep, the loss surely stings, but she was upbeat following the match, saying that her legs finally gave out late in the third set, which was evident watching the lack of lift on her serve.

The result ensured Wozniacki swiped Halep's world number one ranking, six years after losing it at the 2012 Australian Open. "I think being new Grand Slam champion and world number one sounds pretty good", said Wozniacki.

"When I saw that ball go into the net, it was insane emotional", said the 27-year-old, who becomes the first Dane to win a grand slam singles title.

"Right now, to be honest, it's not really my aim because I just think about trying to do well here".

"I want to congratulate Simona, I know it's a tough day", she added after receiving the trophy from Billie Jean King.

"For sure I will fight, I have many years to go so hopefully I will face another challenge like this today", she said.

'I want to congratulate Caroline, you played fantastic. The Exchange market is now pricing the Dane as a [2.38] underdog and I'm very surprised by this. "Tonight is such a special moment". She tied the score, then won the game, and eventually the match, 6-3, 4-6, 9-7. And she is the first Dane to capture a grand slam singles title. She was fighting off cramp during the second set and had her blood pressure checked by the doctor after feeling dizzy in the hot and humid conditions.

Halep, playing with an injured left ankle, rallied from a break down in the third set to lead 4-3 before her opponent took a medical time out. Wozniacki? She only aced twice, had six double faults, capitalized 55 percent of the time on her first serves and only hit 25 winners.

"I can still smile", she said. Regardless of what happens now, I've done my best.

Both women had endured testing paths to the final, saving match points along the way, and at times looked on the point of exhaustion in a gripping final set.
