Fears for Quiksilver boss missing at sea after boat washes ashore

Quiksilver chief executive Pierre Agnes is missing at sea after French coastguards found his empty boat washed ashore in south-western France. "We are concentrating on working with the local authorities on the search and rescue effort and supporting Pierre's family".

Authorities from the Landes prefecture said winds were mild in the region, but waves nearing 2.5 metres in height were limiting visibility.

Mr Agnes, a father of three, joined Quiksilver in 1998, when the Australian brand began to expand internationally.

Pro surfer Kelly Slater took to Instagram with a message about Agnes' disappearance, saying he was "praying for a miracle" during the search.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family all at this time, as well as the search and rescue teams", a statement read.

Boardriders is the former Quiksilver Inc., and Huntington Beach-based parent company to brands that include Quiksilver, Roxy, and DC Shoes; several weeks ago it announced a deal to add Billabong International Ltd.to the fold for $315 million.

Quiksilver is a well-known surf-wear company founded in Australia near the shores of Torquay.

It posted losses in north America and filed for bankruptcy protection, although its European and Asian businesses remained profitable.
