FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe steps down

FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe steps down

FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, who has been a target of unrelenting criticism from President Trump, abruptly announced his resignation Monday, according to a senior government official who was not authorized to comment publicly on personnel matters.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told Monday's briefing that President Donald Trump wasn't part of the decision-making process in McCabe's departure.

Yet as recently as last month, Trump seized on McCabe's role in the Clinton inquiry and his wife's political bid, noting that Jill McCabe received almost $470,000 from a political action committee associated with Clinton ally and Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

McCabe will remain on the Federal Bureau of Investigation payroll until he is eligible to retire with full benefits in mid-March, according to NBC News, citing sources. Wray threatened to resign if McCabe was sacked, prompting Sessions to back off, Axios and The Washington Post reported. Asked about how people should view Trump's frequent Twitter tirades against McCabe, Sanders said the President is simply doing the public a favor.

While the President hasn't personally weighed in on McCabe's departure, Donald Trump Jr. took several swipes at the veteran law enforcement official - particularly for getting his pension. The Post reported that McCabe told Trump he did not vote in the election.

He questioned how Mr McCabe could be in charge of the investigation into Mrs Clinton when his wife had received donations from "Clinton puppets". McCabe's wife, Jill, did not get $700,000 in donations from Clinton for a Virginia state Senate race in 2015.

McCabe oversaw the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server.

McCabe, according to two Virginia campaign consultants - one Republican, one Democratic - with access to the Virginia campaign participation rolls, did not vote in the 2016 presidential general election but did vote in the 2016 Republican presidential primary. But Trump and the administration was "not happy" with him, the same source said.

"The only thing the President applied pressure to is to get it resolved so you guys and everyone else can focus on the things Americans actually care about: making sure everybody gets the Russian Federation fever out of their system once and for all", she said.
