Elon Musk's Roadster to enter orbit any day

Elon Musk's Roadster to enter orbit any day

The company is the only rocket builder in the world that's safely returned first-stage rocket boosters - which provide the initial thrust at liftoff - back to Earth after launches to orbit.

While the added power means it can move heavier payloads into space and out toward distant destinations, such as Mars, the first Falcon Heavy launch is more symbolic.

The demonstration flight of Falcon Heavy will carry a dummy payload, although a simple weight is too boring for Musk. The roaring booms of the Falcon Heavy could be heard at three miles away, at the site of the press. The important thing here is that his Falcon Heavy is finally ready, and before long, it's going to be sending big, heavy things to and from space on a regular basis.

But the Falcon Heavy is essentially three Falcon 9s strapped together, and it'll boast about three times the thrust of the Falcon 9. It has also been in development for quite some time now.

"I love the thought of a auto drifting apparently endlessly through space and perhaps being discovered by an alien race millions of years in the future", Musk replied when asked on Twitter why he wanted to throw away a $100,000 electric sportscar. While crew aboard at least one of SpaceX's fleet of recovery vessels were tasked with attempting to recover any accessible floating debris after the first stage ditched into the ocean, it was very much intentionally expended, and SpaceX's West coast drone ship never left port. GovSat-1 will see this intentional practice of expending recoverable boosters continue - Falcon 9 B1032 is also expected to ditch into the ocean, with no recovery attempt being made aboard the drone ship Of Course I Still Love You. During the first launch, Falcon Heavy's engines will be throttled to 92 percent of full power. "There are a lot of risks associated with Falcon Heavy, a real good chance that that vehicle doesn't make it to orbit", Musk said. The Falcon Heavy will use 27. The new rocket should be capable of carrying 63,800 kg (almost 141,000 lbs.) to low earth orbit (LEO). SpaceX Rendering: The two side boosters separating from the center core of Falcon Heavy. That's been customary ever since a Falcon 9 exploded during a 2016 practice engine firing, destroying both rocket and satellite.

SpaceX will webcast the launch.

SpaceX will test-fire the rocket's 27 engines at the pad Monday.

Follow along live as launch photographer Tom Cross and I cover these exciting proceedings as close to live as possible.

Musk chimed in a few days later to confirm the tentative date of the rocket's maiden flight: "Aiming for first flight of Falcon Heavy on Feb 6 from Apollo launchpad 39A at Cape Kennedy".
