Detroit Motor Show: Ford Ranger adds Mustang power

Detroit Motor Show: Ford Ranger adds Mustang power

The American version of the Ranger debuting Sunday at the Detroit auto show and going on sale next year reverses course on Ford's 2011 decision to depart what was then a declining market for smaller pickups in the first years out of the recession.

The announcement is set for 7:55 a.m. from the atrium stage at the North American International Auto Show inside Detroit's Cobo Hall. "The all-new Ranger is designed for today's midsize truck buyer, delivering even more utility, capability and technology for those who blend city living with more off-the-grid adventures on weekends".

For the market in the US designers want the Ranger to have a "Ford Tough" look, said the EVP of Ford for Global Operations Joe Hinrichs. The 2019 Ford Ranger has yet to have a specific release date, but fans are expecting more information in the coming months.

Under the hood is the same 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that powers the Ford Mustang sports auto.

It will come in three trim levels: XL, XLT and Lariat. In addition, there was only so much that Ford could do when it came to outfitting the truck with enough tech to meet more stringent safety and emissions standards. The engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

A special option package, called FX4, will provide off-road tires, specially tuned shock absorbers, all terrain tires and protective plates on the underside of the truck.

The Ranger also gains Land Rover-like off-road settings that allows the driver to look out the window and match the terrain to any one of four settings: grass, gravel and snow, mud and ruts, and sand.

Although, for a return to the midsize truck segment, you might have expected Ford to target the full breadth of price points, it seems the blue oval is willing to sacrifice the very base level. It is available as FX2 with two-wheel drive or FX4 with four-wheel drive.

Standard accessories with the new 2019 Ranger will include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, automatic high-beams, parking aid, lane-keep assist, and Lane departure warning.

Inside, the Ranger will offer room for up to five people, their gear, and accessories, while featuring a "center stack" includes an 8-in. touch screen for the available SYNC 3 system. The Trail Control feature can also be purchased and it will act as cruise control system. Also 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for as many as 10 devices and a B&O Play premium sound system are also going to be available. "And that's before we introduce it in the biggest truck market in the world, which is the USA".
