Cyber War With China Using 5G? Trump Officials Disagree About The Reports

A presentation was recently made on the topic by a senior National Security Council official to senior administration officials, Axios said. Their second option is to hire wireless providers to build the first 5G network that will offer service without interruption and a secure digital platform (free of Chinese interference and spying) for USA companies.

One option would be for the United States government to pay for and build the network, another would be to rent access to services provided by existing carriers.

The official, confirming the gist of the Axios report, said the option was being debated at a low level in the administration and was six to eight months away from being considered by the president himself. It would then rent access to carriers like AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, it said.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai said in a statement that the private sector is best positioned to promote innovation and that he opposes any federal proposal to "build and operate a nationwide 5G network".

The reasoning behind building such a network as part of a sort of cyber war is to construct a secure network dedicated to Internet traffic for new, more sensitive technologies, such as self-driving vehicles and virtual reality.

But a nationalized 5G network could be "both expensive and duplicative, particularly at a time when the Administration is proposing to slash critical federal investments in R&D and broadband support for unserved areas". "We have no doubt that America will lead the 5G revolution".

He also said certain U.S. mobile network operators have already spent billions of dollars in buying mobile spectrum in the 600-megahertz frequency band for use in launching 5G services.

Nationalizing the 5G wireless network is Trump security team's next plan which is an effort of protecting the country's wireless systems from China and also concerns about cybersecurity.

First of all, the idea that the federal government is going to be able to build this faster than the private market is utterly absurd, as can be demonstrated by every single government project that has gone over budget and taken much longer than expected.

Last March, AT&T agreed to pay $1.6 billion to acquire Straight Path Communications, whose major asset is 735 millimeter-wave (mmWave) licenses in the 39 GHz band and 133 licenses in the 28 GHz band, covering the entire United States, including the top 40 markets.

In December a year ago, when President Trump unveiled his National Security Strategy, he said: "We improve America's digital infrastructure by deploying a secure 5G Internet capability nationwide". Huawei's deal with AT&T to sell its phones through the carrier had fallen through earlier this month.

"The existence of the plan means the current plans of the incumbent carriers to invest in next generation networks have to be reconsidered to consider the risk of government activity in space", added Levin. As Axios notes, the wireless industry is already deploying 5G networks to customers. Unlike many online publications, we don't have a paywall or run banner advertising, because we want to keep our journalism open, without influence or the need to chase traffic.
