Blood shortage prompts 'urgent' need for donors

Blood shortage prompts 'urgent' need for donors

The American Red Cross is asking people in Central Washington to donate blood in response to potential shortages in the eastern United States. The cancelations resulted in over 5,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. Platelet and type O negative and B negative blood donations - in particular - are critically needed right now. The weather cancellations are in addition to seasonal illnesses, such as the flu and hectic holiday schedules that contributed to more than 28,000 fewer donations than what the Red Cross needed in November and December. "Sometimes they'll send a friend or family member in their spot to donate so we don't lose that blood product".

Type O negative: The blood type that can be transfused to nearly everyone and is what doctors reach for in trauma situations.

The Red Cross says they will be accepting all types of blood but especially need Platelets, Type O Negative, Type B negative, and Type AB.

Individuals who are as young as 16 years of age (with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in general good health may be eligible to donate blood.

OBI is urging donors to give blood at the donor centers or mobile blood drives. O-negative, the universal blood type that's always in high demand, can be given to patients of any blood type.
