United Kingdom to vote against Trump's Jerusalem decision

United Kingdom to vote against Trump's Jerusalem decision

The US was further isolated on Monday over President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital, when it blocked a UN Security Council call for the declaration to be withdrawn. US Ambassador Nikki Haley who cast the veto slammed the rejected resolution as "an insult".

Erdogan has taken a leading position in opposing the USA move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, hosting representatives from more than 50 Muslim countries, including US allies, in Istanbul last week for a summit in response. It had the backing of 14 of the 15 countries on the Security Council, including United States allies Britain, France, Japan and Ukraine.

The rare use of the USA veto to block the vote was not an embarrassment, Haley said, but should embarrass the other council members.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced earlier that the Palestinians will apply to the United Nations for full membership of the state of Palestine in response to the USA move on Jerusalem.

"All countries except for the Trump administration acted in unison in this vote".

In his rant in last week's letters section against President Trump's bold decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel, Jon E. Weinstein first disclaims how noble he and "both major parties" were in the 1980s in supporting this very move.

Resolutions presented to the council require nine votes for adoption, but the United States - along with Britain, China, France and Russian Federation - have the power to veto any measure.

"Thank you, Ambassador Haley", he posted on his official Twitter account. Truth defeated lies. Thank you, President Trump. "Thank you, Nikki Haley".

The draft resolution also called upon all countries to refrain from establishing diplomatic missions in Jerusalem.

The Palestinian delegation to the UN?are now instead seeking a vote in the 193-member General Assembly on the U.S. decision on Jerusalem.

Jerusalem, revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike, is home to Islam's third-holiest site and has been at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for decades.

"The United States chooses to disregard worldwide law and ignore the global consensus". US policy had held that the status of Jerusalem is an issue to be decided in peace talks between Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

The Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah party has called for a day of demonstrations in the occupied Palestinian territories to coincide with the Pence trip.

Palestinians see the east part of the city as the capital of their future state. Palestinians want the capital of an independent Palestinian state to be in the city's eastern sector, which Israel captured in a 1967 war and annexed in a move never recognised internationally.

The draft resolution had included a call on all countries to refrain from opening embassies in Jerusalem, reflecting concerns that other governments could follow the USA lead.
