Trump responded to the launch of ballistic missiles by Pyongyang

Trump responded to the launch of ballistic missiles by Pyongyang

The president was pessimistic on the prospect of a deal to avoid a government shutdown, touching off the Democrats' decision to pull out. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan also reprimanded their Democratic colleagues for not showing up, though it was possible to nearly miss their presence, sitting at far ends of the table.

Top congressional Democrats canceled a meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday after the president tweeted that he didn't see the possibility of a deal to avert a government shutdown happening between the two parties.

"Rather than going to the White House for a show meeting that won't result in an agreement", Pelosi and Schumer said in a joint statement, "we've asked Leader McConnell and Speaker Ryan to meet this afternoon".

If it happens, I would absolutely blame the Democrats.

But the New York Democrat and the White House have been locked in a war of words about a potential deal after the president said on Twitter that he was meeting with "Chuck and Nancy" on keeping the government open but "I don't see a deal". "I think we have tremendous support - unanimous vote on the tax bill - I think we're going to get it passed".

Two hours later, Mr. Schumer and Ms. Pelosi struck back. "I don't see a deal".

Tuesday morning, the president tweeted about an upcoming bipartisan meeting. Pelosi tweeted after Trump's White House session that "his empty chair photo opp showed he's more interested in stunts than in addressing the needs of the American people". But on Tuesday, the alliance with "Chuck and Nancy" was no more.

The meeting was meant to discuss the year-end spending bill to keep the federal government running and avert a shutdown. The Trump administration and defense hawks in the Pentagon want to raise defense spending to over $600 billion. Democrats insist that nondefense spending should increase by just as much. "They're not showing up to the meeting".

With few other levers of power, Democrats are under pressure from their core voters to extract as many concessions as they can.

But Democrats' support for any modifications to the legislation would be conditioned on legislative protections for immigrants known as "Dreamers"(those who were brought to the U.S. illegally when still children and who have stayed since) while some conservative Republicans have objections. Democrats want certain guarantees in any deal, including protections for unauthorized immigrants brought to the USA as children and restored funding for CHIP, the children's health insurance program. "Not only put at jeopardy thousands of individuals who are on DACA, but the entire government work force right before the Christmas and Hanukkah holiday, before the New Year?" Unless Congress provides more money, states will have to freeze enrollment or start shutting down the program, which serves more than eight million children.
