Tillerson 'to be sacked' in favour of Central Intelligence Agency boss Pompeo

News media reports, first published by the New York Times, that Trump has a plan to replace his embattled secretary of state with Pompeo, a former USA congressman who now heads the Central Intelligence Agency, drew mixed reviews from serving us officials. Now, instead of having a former fossil fuel CEO at the helm of foreign policy, the United States will have an Islamophobic Koch Brothers shill-who built his own business using Koch money and owes his political career first and foremost to their deep pockets.

In October, Tillerson shot down a report that said he had been on the verge of resigning from his Cabinet position over the summer.

The timing of Tillerson's expected departure remains uncertain, but multiple officials said the shake-up could come at the end of the year or early next.

Does the president still have confidence in Tillerson?

If Cotton is appointed and confirmed to a Trump administration post, he'd be temporarily replaced in the Senate by Arkansas's Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson, before a likely special election to fill the rest of his term later this year.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Kelly told Tillerson's chief of staff on Thursday the reports on Tillerson being replaced were not true.

No matter how long Tillerson is allowed to stay on, his stature and ability to speak on Trump's behalf has been impaired, it is widely agreed. The secretary of state reportedly called Trump a "moron", a charge Tillerson never denied. Too much churn could fuel the perception of chaos in the Trump White House - perhaps one reason he has yet to pull the trigger.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop hopes Rex Tillerson stays on as the U.S. secretary of state.

"It may be February, it may be March, it may be April, but I think once you get to that time period, people are going to feel as though they've kind of put their time in", said one person with close ties to the White House.

Friction between the president and the nation's top diplomat has grown increasingly public through the year.

The president and Mr Tillerson have also been at odds over a range of policy issues, including the Iran nuclear deal and the approach the U.S. should take with North Korea.

The former ExxonMobil executive has also defended the Iran nuclear deal, which Trump last month disavowed.
