New year, blue Moon

New year, blue Moon

It'll be the first of 2018 and it will be closely followed by another at the end of the month, the celestial event known as a blue moon. The Full Wolf Moon, the one taking place on New Year's day, will be visible starting around 4:30PM EST, assuming cloud cover isn't a problem in your location.

January's first full moon, nicknamed a wolf moon, will take place on January 1 and it will be a supermoon.

January 31's supermoon, according to the space agency, will also feature a total lunar eclipse in parts of the country - when the Earth, sun and moon, line up in such a way that the Earth blocks the sunlight that would otherwise reflect off the moon.

"The moon is so bright that it will make the deep sky objects nearby - the Orion nebula, for example - a bit harder to see if the sky isn't perfectly clear", Space.com notes.

Both January 2018 supermoons will be full moons, and they'll appear - especially when close to the horizon - to be larger than usual. Blue moons happen about every two and half years.

A lovely supermoon will light up the sky on New Year's Day and shine as a beacon of hope for all the people who over-celebrated the night before. Really, this is the astrological event that is a true must-see in January. The final installment of the supermoon series will kick off on January 31, which will be "extra special", NASA says.

"The lunar eclipse on January 31 will be visible during moonset". Only light reflected off the Earth will show on the surface of the moon, which will have a red to reddish-brown cast.

However, this time around the blue moon will occur on the same night (or morning, depending on where you are) as a total lunar eclipse. Viewers on the eastern side of the United States will be able to view a partial lunar eclipse during moonset on the morning of February 1. Noah Petro, a research scientist from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre, stated that the supermoons are a great chance to start looking at the moon, not just that once but every opportunity you have!
