McConnell eases stance on Moore, says voters should 'make the call'

On ABC's This Week today, George Stephanopoulos asked McConnell about whether he'll push for Moore to go before the Senate Ethics Committee. Fifty percent of respondents said they support Jones, a former federal prosecutor, while 47 percent said they support Moore, a former Alabama chief judge.

The margin of error is 4.5%. Despite the allegations against Moore though, polls still show the Republican candidate is the favorite to win the race with the RealClearPolitics average of polls putting Moore ahead by 2.5 points.

Just 9 percent of Republicans polled say they're voting for Mr. Jones.

A student-run Emerson College Polling Society survey by the student-run Emerson College Polling Society showed Moore leading by 6 percentage points.

Moore had repeatedly denied the allegations. Moore leads among men by 15%.

Among Republicans who say they don't believe the allegations, 92 percent say Democrats are behind the charges and 88 percent say the media are.

The CBS News poll surveyed 1,067 registered voters in Alabama from November 28 to December 1.

The poll also finds 58% of all Alabama voters think abortion should be illegal.

The Washington Post published a bombshell report last month on the allegations based on interviews with more than 30 people. Since then more women have come forward to complain about Moore.

After McConnell said Moore should step aside, Moore tweeted that it was McConnell who should bow out of politics, saying he "has failed conservatives and must be replaced". Just 35 percent of likely voters said they believe Moore pursued relationships with teenage girls when he was in his 30s, while 37 percent said they are either unsure or do not have an opinion, and 28 percent said they do not believe the allegations, the poll found. Eighty percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents said they trust Moore over Jones on abortion.

Moore's campaign has been rocked by multiple accusations of sexual assault and harassment against him.
