Israeli army destroys tunnel from Gaza

He said that, based on intelligence, the Israeli army believed the tunnel belonged to Hamas, the militant organization that runs Gaza.

Palestinians say the two killed were members of the Al-Quds Brigade, the military wing of Islamic Jihad.

However apex leaders in Hamas has also declared a new "intifada" in the wake of US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Smoke was seen rising from the Gaza Strip, where the area where the attack was reported to have taken place. A third rocket was intercepted by an Iron Dome system.

While tensions are high on the border with Gaza, the IDF estimates that Hamas is not seeking to escalate the situation and engage in a full-blown armed conflict with Israel, at this time.

However, the Israeli army on Tuesday denied it carried out the air strike, according to reports.

Rocket sirens sounded in southern Israeli communities near the border with the Gaza Strip and residents in the southern Israeli cities of Ashkelon and Ashdod reported hearing explosions.

Shortly after midnight on Tuesday, Israeli forces attacked Hamas targets in the northern Gaza Strip after Palestinians fired a rocket toward the southern city of Ashkelon, the army said. A third rocket was shot down by Israel's Iron Dome anti-missile system. At least ten terrorists were injured, of which two were killed.

During the 2014 Gaza war, Hamas militants launched surprise attacks from tunnels that crossed under Israel's security fence and into Israel. Hits inside Israeli territory have not been identified.

On Sunday, the Israeli forces destroyed Hamas tunnels in Gaza, however, announcing that the operation hasn't been linked to the recent clashes between Palestinians and police.
