Israel says it has destroyed Hamas assault tunnel from Gaza

According to Conricus, the tunnel stretched from the area of the city of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip to hundreds of metres inside Israeli territory.

Military spokesman Jonathan Conricus said intelligence showed the tunnel belonged to Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip.

The tunnel was "a blatant breach of Israel's sovereignty, an unacceptable situation which prompted the IDF's actions", the military said, and its exposure was "an operational success based on advanced technology, a testimony to the IDF's upgraded abilities".

Conricus said that "to the best of our knowledge" there were no such casualties on Sunday, though he added that the tunnels could be "death traps" for Gaza gunmen.

A Hamas attack tunnel that entered Israeli territory, which was destroyed by the IDF on December 10, 2017.

This was the second tunnel destroyed using a new system to detect, expose and destroy tunnels in the past six weeks. The tunnel has since been under IDF monitoring until its destruction on Sunday.

The Salafi Islamic terror group Tawhid al-Jihad, which has in the past sought to overthrow Hamas's rule in Gaza, later claimed responsibility for the rocket launches.

Hamas has built a sophisticated network of terror tunnels in the Gaza Strip and running into Israel, used for storing weapons, smuggling and terrorist infiltrations into Israel.

The tunnel had electricity and other amenities, such as ventilation and communications equipment, suggesting that it was a significant tunnel for Hamas, the IDF also said in a statement.
