Former aide claims Rep. Franks offered her $5M to carry his child

Former aide claims Rep. Franks offered her $5M to carry his child

Yesterday, Lauretta and I reported on how Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) was going to resign from Congress.

The Arizona Republican had announced only Thursday that he would leave the House over accusations that he asked two former aides to bear his child as surrogate mothers.

The Associated Press reports that Franks denies ever physically intimidating, coercing or attempting to have sexual contact with any member of his congressional staff.

"Due to my familiarity and experience with the process of surrogacy, I clearly became insensitive as to how the discussion of such an intensely personal topic might affect others", said Franks, who was first elected to Congress in 2002.

Franks is a conservative Republican and serves on the House Armed Services and Judiciary committees.

Reporter Kyle Cheney posted what appears to be a letter by Franks confirming his resignation after finding out the Ethics Committee is reviewing complaints about his "discussion of surrogacy with two previous female subordinates, making each feel unforgettable".

He says that in the "current cultural and media climate" he would "unable to complete a fair House Ethics investigation".

Franks and his wife have struggled with infertility.

The exact reason for Franks's resignation is unknown, but the congressman indicated he would later release a statement explaining his decision. "She came to me shaking and sobbing, and she shared a story that I think is horrific, a powerful man hiring young women, procuring staff, to potentially surrogate children for him", Lafferty said.

Franks said he would resign effective January 31.

Franks is also a member of the House Freedom Caucus, a hard-right faction that has often clashed with Republican leaders. He said he'd depart in a few weeks. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., also resigned earlier this week facing multiple allegations of sexual harassment. He sought to clarify the comment, saying later-term abortions linked to pregnancies caused by rape are infrequent.
