Dhoni may return as CSK skipper after new IPL rule

The CSK and RR, who are returning to the league after paying two years suspension, will be permitted to retain players who played for their respective squad in the 2015 IPL season and the ones who were part of now-defunct teams Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiants.

The governing council of the tournament came to the conclusion that the IPL franchises will be able to retain a maximum of five players through a combination of pre-auction retention and Right To Match (RTM) cards.

If there is no retention before player auction then franchises can have up to 3 RTM.

The IPL Governing Council and the Committee of Administrators (CoA) met in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss IPL Player retention policy, salary cap, player regulations and other related issues. Each franchise team will have a maximum of 25 players (up to eight foreign) and a minimum of 18 players.

The IPL Governing Council had allowed a maximum of either three retentions or three Right To Match (RTM) at the discretion of the franchises.

They were replaced by Rising Pune Supergiants - who employed Dhoni as captain - and the Gujarat Lions. Interestingly, the GC chose to let the teams retain a maximum of 3 capped Indian cricketers.

The decision enables former Indian captain MS Dhoni to return to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise from the 2018 season without being placed in the auction pool. He further said MS Dhoni's inclusion in CSK is subject to the player and the franchise itself. For the 2018 IPL season, the salary budgets for the IPL teams have also been increased to 80 crores from 66 crores.

If a team does not wish to retain any player, it will still have the option of three Right to Match.

If a franchise opts to retain three players pre-auction, it will cost them a total of INR 15, 11 and 7 Crores (INR 33 Crores) respectively for the trio. The caps for the two subsequent years have been fixed at Rs 82 crore and 85 crore respectively.

Considering the player auction will be a big one, the IPL has increased the salary cap significantly. For instance, if Royal Challengers Bangalore opt against retaining Chris Gayle and one of the other franchises buy him for an amount, say INR 5 Crores, then RCB can activate their RTM and get Gayle back for the same amount, i.e INR.5 Crores.
