Deadly Bronx Fire Started by Child Playing with Stove

Deadly Bronx Fire Started by Child Playing with Stove

In what is being described as the worst fire tragedy in New York City in at least a quarter century, 12 people, including four children, were killed in a five-story apartment complex in the Bronx on Thursday night.

The fire spread up the stairs and cut off exit points for people on the upper floors. "Based on the info now, I'm sorry to report 12 New Yorkers are dead, including one child".

She took her two children and fled the apartment -leaving the door open.

Nigro said, 'the stairway acted like a chimney'. From there, the fire spread throughout the five-story building, authorities said.

"It is the time of year where people celebrate and certainly here we have people who have lost their lives, lost their homes, lost everything and we grieve with them as everyone in this city should and does".

One family lost four members: Karen Stewart-Francis, her daughters, 2-year-old Kiley Francis and 7-year-old Kelly Francis, and their cousin, 19-year-old Shawntay Young, relatives said.

Firefighters work at the scene of an apartment fire in the Bronx, New York on Thursday. The family, a husband and wife and four children, got out.

At roughly 7 p.m. on December 28, a fire began at an apartment building in the Bronx.

"I heard people screaming, 'There's a fire in the building!'" he said.

"I thought maybe he was coming back", said his father, Kwabena Mensah, according to CBS News. Still, his family pounded the pavement, asking about him and hoping for good news.

It was constructed in 1916 and had more than 20 units, according to property records cited by the newspaper. One violation was for a broken smoke detector in an apartment on the first floor that was reported in August. His wife was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and was OK, Rodriguez said, but it was "devastating" that other neighbors weren't as lucky. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear. Investigators will look at whether the door to the apartment was defective or if an obstruction prevented it from closing, he said.

Activity from police and fire department officers cut through what otherwise was a generally quiet residential neighborhood that sits a short distance from the Bronx Zoo, St. Barnabas Hospital and Fordham University. He got that family out of the burning building safely before pulling four more people from the fire, said Twum Bredu, his uncle who lived next door.

But Nigro said there was nothing unusual about the structure of the building that would have made it especially prone to such a disaster, a point that Mayor Bill de Blasio, D, reiterated later on WNYC radio.
