Charles Leclerc to race for Sauber alongside Marcus Ericcson in 2018

This season the 20-year-old from Monaco has tested with both Ferrari and Sauber, and enjoyed another four F1 practice outings with the latter, who will be known as the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team for 2018.

F2 champion LeClerc had always been expected to make the jump to the pinnacle of motorsport.

Fiat Chrysler have invested billions of euros since 2014 to develop new Alfa Romeo models that would stand up against German premium rivals and shed a reputation for poor quality and service that has hit sales in the past decade.

As the leading light of the Ferrari Driver Academy, Leclerc's promotion to the top level of motorsport had been widely rumoured for months.

But there had been doubts about Ericsson's roles, despite the fact that his personal sponsors are also involved in Longbow Finance, the group that bought out Sauber in 2016. He's started 76 Grand Prix races but ended 2017 without any points.

Despite the stronger links to Ferrari, the Italian manufacturer was unable to get its way, with Sauber confirming Leclerc and Ericsson at its launch on Saturday. While Sauber is not a competitive team and Leclerc will likely struggle to score points by finishing races in the top 10, this will be a great opportunity for him to showcase his driving talent to some of the sport's top teams.

As expected, Mercedes protégé Wehrlein is left out of the line-up.

Besides the one remaining seat at Williams alongside Lance Stroll, Sauber was still yet to confirm either of its 2018 drivers, with three candidates being in contention. The team parted company with former team boss Monisha Kaltenborn, who was replaced by Frederic Vasseur, before abandoning a Honda engine deal which had been agreed earlier in the season.

Sauber has unveiled its concept livery for the 2018 Formula 1 season, in the wake of its collaboration with FCA brand Alfa Romeo.
