Brazilian great Kaka announces retirement from football

Former AC Milan and Real Madrid midfielder Ricardo Izecson Kaka who won World Cup in 2002 announced his retirement.

"I came to the conclusion that now is the time to finish my career as a professional player", the 35-year-old said in an interview with the Brazilian television network Globo.

Kaka began to play at Sao Paulo and made excellent career since then. Further spells at Milan and Sao Paulo ensued before the midfielder concluded his career in the United States of America with Major League Soccer outfit Orlando City.

His four seasons in the Spanish capital were ravaged by injury, before returning to Milan in 2013 for one season, before finishing up his career Stateside with the newly formed Orlando City.

A devout Christian, Kaka wrote in a Twitter post on Sunday: "Father, it was much more than I could ever [have] imagined".

Born Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, Kaka won the 2002 World Cup with Brazil and also boasts two Confederations Cup wins amongst his 92 caps and 29 global goals.

"I needed time to think and take a very calm decision, very calm and very aware of what I will want for my professional life", Kaka said. Thank you! I'm now ready for the next journey.

He also helped the Italian side to a Serie A title in 2003-04 and propelled Milan to the 2007 Champions League title, scoring a competition-best 10 goals as the club were crowned kings of Europe for the seventh time. "I'd rather take part as a manager or sporting director".

He also added that he might continue taking part in the football world: "I will continue in football but in a different role".
