Rasgulla belongs to West Bengal, not Odisha

Rasgulla belongs to West Bengal, not Odisha

After two and a half years of bitter battle between Odisha and West Bengal, the latter finally won the Geographical Identification (GI).

A Hindustan Times report quoted Sanjay Bhattacharya, deputy controller of patents and designs in Kolkata, as saying: "It has been settled under the GI Act that authenticates a product relating to either a geographical location or community or society".

Tweeted Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, "Sweet news for us all".

"Sweet news for us all".

A few years ago, things got serious when the West Bengal government filed a court petition along with an application for a Geographical Indication (GI) recognition for the Rasgolla.

Shashi Bhusan Behera, the Finance Minister of Odisha has said that West Bengal winning GI tag on Rasagola is injustice to Odisha as the sweet is rooted to Jagannath culture.

He added that Rosogolla is origin of West Bengal. Both the states claimed ownership over its generation.

The GI Registrar office also informed that if Odisha applies and there is sufficient evidence, it can get GI tag too. Darjeeling tea, for instance, has a GI tag for the tea produced exclusively in Darjeeling's tea gardens, as does Champagne for a specific bubbly produced in Champagne, France - all the rest simply being "Sparkling Wines". There are several evidences that the sweet dish originated in Odisha and not in West Bengal, said researcher on Jagannath Cult Asit Mohanty, who had submitted the report to the then Science and Technology Minister Pradeep Panigrahy in July previous year.

Countering Odisha's claim, the Bengal government applied for GI tag from the GI registry in Chennai, asserting there was "ample" documentary evidence to prove the sweet belongs to Bengal and was invented by famous sweetmeat maker Nabin Chandra Das in 1868. We are all so happy.

West Bengal's Education Minister Partha Chattetjee said, "Odisha unnecessarily raised a dispute over the issue".
